出版社「玄武書房」在進行中型日本語詞典《大渡海》的編撰計劃時，在該社營業部門任職的馬締光也，被即將退休的資深辭典編輯荒木發現，並調動到辭典編輯部。在公司內部素有「浪費公司資金的害蟲」之稱的辭典編輯部裡，馬締光也對於語言強烈的執著以及堅持不懈的天性，讓其充分展現出辭典編輯的才能，並以此存活下去。

Majime and Araki visit Matsumoto with an advanced copy of Daitokai. Matsumoto is pleased, but he tells them he has cancer. That spring, the team gets a call informing them of his death. Daitokai is completed, and they throw a party to celebrate. Araki reads a moving thank you letter from Matsumoto. Later, Majime reflects on Matsumoto's message as he walks with Kaguya, finding peace and solace.
