本劇原名《巴金命案 The Barking Murders 》，因視角專注於案件中逝去的生命而改名。 故事講述真實發生過的埃塞克斯郡巴金區命案，以受害者家屬的角度描述 Stephen Port 的一聯串犯罪行為，和備受批評的警方調查過程。 強奸犯兼聯環殺手 Stephen Port 在同志交友網站找尋目標，然後對他們下藥及強暴，其中有四人因 Stephen Port 用藥過量而死；然而當時頭三宗命案明明有著相似性，但警方沒有以「聯環殺人」的方向調查，故此受害者家屬認為警方也得對兇案一再發生而負責。
