Glasgow, Schotland, jaren '30. De jonge James Herriot begint zijn studie aan de Glasgow Veterinary College waarna hij hoopt dierenarts te kunnen worden. Al snel raakt hij bevriend met Emma 'Whirly' Tyson en Rob McAloon en trekken ze samen in bij Elspeth Munro. Op school krijgen ze het zwaar verduren door Gunnell, hun professor.
