Worum geht es in Small Island?
Nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs träumt Jamaikanerin Hortense von einem besseren Leben in England. Darum heiratet sie den Royal-Air-Force-Piloten Gilbert, auch wenn sie ihn gar nicht liebt. Ihr Herz gehört eigentlich Michael, doch um ihrem ärmlichen Leben zu entfliehen, ist die Zweckehe mit Gilbert die einzige Lösung. Leider sehen sich die beiden Jamaikaner in England überwiegend mit rassistischen Vorurteilen konfrontiert. Lediglich Queenie zeigt sich offenherzig und freundet sich schnell mit Hortense an. Die neugewonnene Freundin steckt selbst in einer ähnlichen Situation fest, da sie ihren Mann Bernard nur geheiratet hat, um der Schweinefarm ihrer Familie zu entgehen. Doch die beiden Frauen teilen mehr als ihnen bewusst ist, denn auch Queenie hatte eine Affäre mit Michael, als ihr eigener Mann im Krieg war.

Queenie is shocked when her husband Bernard returns to her after years away. When she goes into labour and has a baby by a mysterious father, the lives of all four are changed forever.
